NE 42ND AVENUE COMMUNITY PLAZA
This project converted an existing landscape strip outside of the Spare Room Restaurant and Lounge into a gathering area with artful wood plank seating, a small paved area, and a rain garden. The project was sponsored by Our 42nd Avenue, a Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative whose mission is to foster economic growth in ways that support and involve neighborhood residents. It was conceived in response to community requests for more gathering and stopping points along the street, and made possible by the property owner granting the space to public use.
In keeping with the mission of Our 42nd Avenue, the project was entirely designed and built by people who live and work in the surrounding community. The wood for the benches is reclaimed tropical hardwood, the rain garden infiltrates rain runoff from the adjacent building roof, and the garden is planted with native and drought tolerant species that provide bird and insect habitat. It is in use year round as a resting spot where people stop and gather.
